Hi everyone, in this video we’re going to look at the difference between two commonly confused verbs. These are hear and listen.

Let’s start with the first verb. This one is hear hear.
Notice I don’t pronounce that R. Okay. This is very typical in many varieties of British English.
Also the past of this is heard hear.
I hear a lot of people having problems with this word, heard and word, that rhymes.
So anyway, just something to be aware of. We have hear hear and heard
heard. Now to hear things means to essentially be aware of things around you in terms of sound. So you are aware of things with your ears. You could say, for example, right now if I stop,
okay, I can hear the traffic. I can hear schoolchildren. I can hear my computer. I can hear people talking.
Okay, so these are basically sounds that I am aware of.
Listen on the other hand, and do pay attention to this one, that T is silent, okay.
Don’t say lisTen, but listen listen.
Listen is actually when you pay attention to something and you focus your ears.
You could say you focus your attention on something in particular. This is why we say things like listen to music.
Okay. Because you’re actively sitting and listening. If you hear music, maybe it’s a song that’s in the background. Like “huh? I can hear that”.
It just means that you are aware that there is music happening.
But if you are listening to the music, it means that you are focusing on the music.
So if you’re not sure which verb to use, think of it this way, are you paying close attention and really focusing on the sound? Or are you just aware that the sound is around you but you’re not necessarily focusing on it?
If it’s the second one, then it’s going to be hear. Okay?
Remember these are things general sounds that are happening around you, you’re not really focusing on them.
While if it’s the first one and you’re actually paying attention to a specific sound, maybe it’s music,
maybe it’s someone talking or something like that. Maybe it’s this video. Okay, you are focusing on this video.
Then you are “listening to”, make sure you also get that preposition as well.
You don’t listen someone or listen something, but you listen to someone or you listen to something.
So that is it for this video, if you have enjoyed it and you’ve learned something new then please hit that like button, it is a lovely free way for you to help me out.
